Thames Coast Kiwi Care

Another year, another great weekend pulling on our boots and gardening gloves in the Coromandel to volunteer with Thames Coast Kiwi Care (TCKC), who are celebrating an exciting milestone, 20 years of service! In that time, they’ve made remarkable progress in restoring the kiwi population in the Te Mātā area – growing from just 28 to around 350 kiwi residents. Today, over 5,000 hectares of bush is protected, with 1,000 traps deployed for pest control.

Four years on from our first working bee, 22 Degrees is still getting stuck in – tackling pests and rodents in the bush. We support TCKC through donations and annual working bees, helping to lay new trap lines and clear overgrown tracks.

This year with 21 hands on deck, we split into three teams to install 31 new AT220 traps (auto reset smart traps catching rats, possums and stoats) in record time. Spirits were high as the day wrapped up with a cold beverage, a refreshing dip in the watering hole, and knowing our time was well spent on a great cause.
