Bay of Islands Airport – Te Pēwhairangi

About Bay of Islands Airport – Te Pēwhairangi
The Bay of Islands Terminal is a modern facility that replaced the original 1980s terminal. It serves various functions, including departures, arrivals, car hire, and a café on the ground level, with management and airline lounge facilities on a mezzanine level. The building’s elongated “lean to” shape maximizes the site area and complies with the OLS plane requirements.
Significant to the local Ngāpuhi iwi, the terminal incorporates cultural elements through local artists’ contributions, such as precast patterns, a sculpture garden, Māori carvings, and window designs. The project, influenced by the local Ngati Rehia hapu, involved relocating and demolishing the old Aero Club building and constructing the new two-level terminal.
