Tarawera High School

About Tarawera High School

Tarawera High School, located in Kawerau, Bay of Plenty, is beautifully situated by the Tarawera River and under the mountain of Putauaki. The school’s design reflects the unique culture, history, and landscape of Kawerau, aiming to inspire learning and promote the potential of its youth.

The masterplan, developed through extensive community engagement, places community and cultural facilities at the heart of the school. It features open-plan learning spaces with advanced, innovative environments that support various teaching practices and can be used by both the school and the community.

The new buildings are aligned along significant ley lines, with a central multipurpose Wharenui facing north towards the Tarawera River’s coast. Communal facilities, including a Performing Arts Centre and Hospitality Suite, are arranged around an open courtyard, creating a welcoming entrance aligned with the culturally significant Putauaki mountain. This thoughtful design modernizes the school’s facilities and accommodates a growing student population.
