The Bay of Islands Airport Terminal is a project incorporating a modern design that is heavily influenced by the local Ngati Rehia hapu as well as contextural issues. The airport was operational through the design and construction and involved the initial relocation and then demolition of the old Aero Club building and the construction of the new two level terminal building. Expansions and upgrading of the existing facilities also included the runways and taxiways. The new airport facility was given a Public Architecture award in 2020 by Te Kahui Whaihanga/New Zealand Institute of Architects.
